Universal Exercise Unit
"Spider Cage"
The Universal Exercise Unit (UEU), often called a "Spider Cage," is a specialized, three-sided steel rehabilitation cage used for intensive physical therapy. It employs a system of pulleys, elastic bungee cords, and weights to isolate muscle groups, improve strength, increase range of motion, and promote functional independence. The system is highly effective for pediatric and neurological conditions like Cerebral Palsy.

Key Features and Benefits

-
Spider Cage Configuration: Uses elastic bungees to support the patient, reducing gravity's impact to allow for independent movement and safe balance training.
-
Pulley System: Utilizes weighted sandbags to facilitate precise, isolated strengthening and endurance training for weak muscles.
-
Targeted Therapy: Allows therapists to isolate specific movements, preventing compensatory strategies (incorrect muscle usage).
-
Conditions Treated: Frequently used for Cerebral Palsy, traumatic brain injury, developmental delays, stroke rehabilitation, and orthopedic injuries.
-
Functionality: Enhances balance, coordination, sensory integration, and functional skills such as sitting, standing, and walking.
How It Works
The UEU acts as a "cage" where the patient is suspended, allowing for safe, assisted, and unassisted exercises. The harness system can be adjusted to provide either maximum support or, as the patient gains strength, minimal support, making it an effective, progressive training tool. It is used to help patients gain control over their body in a gravity-reduced environment before transitioning to daily, everyday movement.
